2007 Dodge Durango A/C issues Sign In

Hey all!
First post so hopefully this goes well..
So I have an 07 Durango with a 4.7, dual evap cores. O-rings were leaking at the expansion valve at the firewall so I replaced those, put some compressed air through my manifold service line to ensure I had no leaks and sure enough, nothing, so I ran a vacuum and it held vacuum as well. When I went to charge the system I literally only got about 6oz in before my gauges read 44 Low side on low and 209-210 on high side. Temperature was 91 degrees with 47% humidity.High side line was scalding hot too and to top it off the expansion valve at the rear evaporator was hissing indicating a leak. I don’t understand why it wouldn’t show up when I pumped the system with compressed air or even ran the vacuum. Can anyone help me understand why after only adding 6 oz is the system acting like I have full charge with those readings and obviously warm air out the vents? Andwhy it hissed like it did after I started adding Freon? Anyway to bypass the rear evaporator?

? Just tell me first that this was OE 134a not 1234yf?
Dual system just BTW use front only for pressures but you've said enough with just 6oz of anything in there it didn't just blow right out so leave a seriously clogged up condenser IMO so far. Both evaps work with one condenser isn't clear enough to pass squat thru it.

Try but not for too long you are starving a compressor now of oil with just 6oz of charge in it chances are it was already the issue thru lot of junk into condenser. Strong clue there to me anyway,

I'm assuming you just didn't have enough charge in the system yet to activate the condenser fans. This happens a lot on Chrysler product that use 2 speed fans.

Car comes in with air not cold enough. You put the gauges on it and the pressures appears to indicate a full charge but you start to put more refrigerant in and the pressure starts to climb and suddenly the high speed fans kick in and the pressures come right down.

This is why it is vital to evacuate and recharge with the exact specified weight of refrigerant. Only then will the pressures mean anything.

As for your leak, who knows what went wrong.

Partial quote from top - ">I literally only got about 6oz in<"

That's so little of anything nothing should be happening yet in a dual set up as well? Wild problem to see those pressures so fast?? T

Not surprising if there was no fan at all.

Yes it was 134a and yeah I know pressures are taken from the front only. I’ll flush out the whole system and retry and if anything I’ll block out the rear evap as well.

No, pressures are not taken from the front only. The pressures are the same throughout the whole system.

Like I said, the issue is likely that the fans just haven't come on yet.

As I mentioned in my other reply, I’m gonna flush out the system and fix the rear evap leak if not block it off since it’s an older vehicle and perhaps get rid of it later down the line. I’ll recheck the fans when I get a chance as well and put a full charge in. When I saw the gauges I freaked out a bit so I stopped at around 6oz. I think what I’ll do is jump my fans to full speed, that way I can be sure I’m getting accurate readings as well.

Yes that’s what I meant, just my verbiage was different.
Gotcha, thanks for the reply.

No, do not try to jump those fans. It is a complicated circuit that uses relays to change the circuit and you can fry things.

Just watch the gauges as it fills. Let it go as high as 300PSI before shutting it down. The fans should kick on before that and bring the pressures down.

Closing off the rear evap isn't all that easy. You need special fittings that aren't readily available and it will take less of a charge after.

I know what you’re saying about the fan circuit, I usually test fans by disconnecting the plugs and checking to see if the motors are good by powering them separately. But that’s fine I’ll just watch my pressures as you mentioned. I know what fittings to use for blocking off the rear evap as well since I just found them and getting to the lines is not difficult but I’ll just fix the leak. I normally don’t have issues when doing AC work and fix most issues but I suppose for whatever reason this one through me off.

Re: 2007 Dodge Durango A/C issues Sign In

I just looked at the wiring diagram and this circuit isn't as complicated as the GM circuit that uses 3 relays. This one uses a resister for low speed and they very frequently burn out so you may only have high speed and that would explain the initial high pressures because it won't kick in until around 275.

You actually can jump out high speed pretty easily by applying power to the Dk Blue/Dk Green wire.

Re: 2007 Dodge Durango A/C issues Sign In

Yeah, even on replacement fans the wire colors are usually dk blue as well. Even if I got the polarity reversed the most that would happen is it would spin in the opposite direction from my experience so I’m not worried about frying a circuit since I’ll be testing my fans independently. That way at least I know my fans will kick on when pressures go higher which in turn will bring pressures down as you stated. Thanks for the info.

This is a 3 wire fan for 2 speeds. The wire for high speed is the one with the colors I gave you. You want the blue with green tracer.
