2006 Ford Escape rpm dip causing shudder
|

Hello all, I own 2006 Ford Escape 3.0 with 170k miles. In the past few months the rpms like to dip (enough to cause a shudder, feels exactly like a misfire) right as I’m coming to a complete stop, making my car suddenly jerk to a complete stop because of the loss of power. It’s really annoying, I’ve noticed the dip is caused by the ac compressor engaging. The rpms instantly return to normal and while stopped will maintain idle as the compressor cycles on and off. No issues either when car is in park. From a complete stop, if I let go of the brake and just let the car coast forward, the rpm dip occurs when the compressor engages and the car shudders as well. The ac itself is golden. It cools the Miami heat like no other. But coming to red lights and stop signs is becoming increasingly annoying and I have to fix this issue. I can’t imagine it’s enjoyable either for anyone driving behind me. When I bought the car the compressor was leaky and so I got it changed and the system recharged. That was about 4-5 years ago and all has been well since until a few months ago that I started noticing the issue (I let it go to see if eventually it would throw a code). I’ve changed the IAC already to no avail and there is no check engine light or pending codes. Highly doubt it’s low of coolant because that would suggest a leak and it’s been months with this issue and the ac cools instantly in a subtropical climate. Please help me out here.

There must be at least codes pending and there's a risk of serious damage using A/C that behaves like that need to know NOW if compressor is overloading the engine OR it can't compensate idle speed for a normal expected load. Allow it to be diagnose and I suggest NOT using it till you can do that it's a maybe it could seize up (if that's the issue) and render the car unusable at all. Good luck hope you can save it and it isn't self destructing unknown right now, T

You replaced the IAC but did you clean the throttle plate and surrounding bore? Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I cleaned the throttle body a few months after I got the car. It wasn’t that dirty but I cleaned it anyway.

I guess the bigger question is why is the AC kicking on when coming to a stop? That timing isn't normal for a cycling system. Does the truck run normally if you shut the AC off? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The only thing that changes with Max AC is it switched from outside air to inside air but that can effect pressures and cycling. The first thing you need to do is have the AC checked and see what is going on with the pressures and whether it is cycling normally.

UPDATE Replacing the IAC with a genuine Motorcraft one fixed the issue. The cheap aftermarket one could not perform the same. I don't know what brand it was but it had a blue marker dot on it whereas the motorcraft one has a green mark on it. I decided to replace it again after months of thinking on it. If anyone is having the same issue without a CEL, there you go. The car runs flawlessly now.
