I have a 1999 GMC Sierra, the A/C compressor will not engage when the truck is idling. I can rev the engine to around 2000 rpm’s and it will engage and cools fine after that. What would be causing this problem, or where should I start checking? Thanks for your time.

Which engine, how many miles on this?
Any which way if it cools properly and you did nothing else but rev it up I suspect the clutch air gap is too large finally can engage perhaps just more voltage output from alternator a reason?

AYOR and at means there's risk that can harm YOU or the truck. Tap on outer hub with probably a rubber hammer carefully look at direction it should spin to you don't bust anything or get a tosses hammer back at you, hit fan blade or more. If just that it would engage at idle but may not re-engage.
Just FYI the spec for air gaps is roughly .020 will engage with a good clutch coil as high as almost .030 then iffy and don't work at all,

Tom is right about the clutch being the problem but on these compressors, the clutch parts are pressed on and not adjustable. I wouldn't even consider replacing the clutch alone as it will cost nearly as much as a new compressor.

Just replace the whole compressor and accumulator and orifice tube. Evacuate and recharge.

I actually just looked at my own, probably the common for V8s if so. OE Delph, the "belly-leaker" were known as. A lot may have been changed to another like Sanden as bolt on replacements? It's still about that air gap.
If the Delph still (could be I suppose mine is) there's an OE cap where probably a nut is doesn't look serviceable. IDK and not touching it but bet that comes out and exposes how it's installed does appear not serviceable.
Agree - most would be tossed for another and not bother as Hammer said they did or didn't leak and be a problem you don't want another with a know issue but would want a new bolt on if no choices. Simple set up as they go,
