fuel line mixup. help!

 1998 chevy cavalier 2.2
i had a leaking fuel line at the first fitting beyond the gas tank on 2 lines. there are 3 lines coming out of tank. the one going to fuel filter is not leaking. the problem i have is that i cut out all the rotted steel line on the other 2 leaking lines without labeling them. 1 is 5/16" and the other is 1/4", but both lines on pvc side(coming out of the gas tank) are both 5/16". how can i tell the difference between them and not reconnect everything wrong? how do i know which line goes where? and more importantly, if i get them crossed, what will happen?
