The deal is my 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage recently blew a tranny. The cost to rebuild it is $1600. The car has 128,000 miles and other than a non-functioning air conditioner, is in decent shape overall. Is it worth putting this kind of money into this car at this point in it's life, or should I just junk it.

I guess the answer to that is another question. How well do you like the car and do you want to continue to drive it?

First off that seems a bit high to rebuild a tranny..... Secondly, what type of warrenty are they going to give you on the rebuild? 90 days, 6 months a year? Sometimes a rebuild doesn't really fix the problem so its something to consider.

The main thing that way2old was getting at, do you like the car and can you afford a different car. Sometimes paying the $1600 would be cheaper then buying a newer car or a new car for that matter.

Some leases are really cheap since the automotive industry which could be another option.

I hope this helps a little.
