Opinions on estimates and whether some work is really critical Sign In

A family friend received an estimate for repairs on their car. I think it's a 2012 Nissan Quest.

The estimates are from a dealership. This family friend speaks hardly any English, and of course we aren't mechanics. It would be great to get opinions on whether the estimates are fair (which I doubt) and whether some of the cited issues are in fact "critical."

Also, the family friend initially took the car to an independent shop to have the steering checked out. (It was the only problem he was aware of.) That shop told him he had to go to a dealer to get it fixed. So then of course the dealer found a big list of issues.

I'm also curious which problems can only be handled by the dealer. I know some things can be fixed elsewhere like the tire stuff, spark plugs, filters.

Thanks

None of this stuff has to be done by the dealer.

The power steering pump is electric over hydraulic which makes it a bit hard to find in the aftermarket but it IS available. I priced it through my supplier and I can buy it for under $600. Of course that is dealer cost but you would pay about $1,000 plus labor which under 2 hours. It is special order but it is available.

The rest of the stuff is a combination of maintenance and things that are showing some deterioration so nothing is emergency but should be considered in the near future. Any qualified shop can do this cheaper.

Thank you - that's very helpful.

I found a shop that replaces power steering assemblies, so I'm going to send the guy their way.
