Engine running hot - 2011 Jeep Patriot; 2.4L; 173k mi Sign In

Hi all. First time poster here. Please forgive me if my terminology is off. I'm hoping to get some advice on the cooling system in my 2011 Jeep Patriot (2.4L; 173k miles).

My car has been running pretty hot. When I'm driving, it doesn't take too long before my radiator/engine temperature meter hits and hovers around the 3/4 mark. I can usually bring it back down if I accelerate a bit. If I drive long distances and/or am driving fast or uphill, it'll overheat.

Even if I sit in park with the engine on, the temperature meter will run up to the 3/4 mark. Again, I can rev my engine to 2500+ rpm to bring the temperature back down.

As the temperature gauge hits the 3/4 mark, my AC warms up. When I bring the engine temperature down by ramping up the rpm's, my AC will start blowing cold again.

Other things that might be relevant:
* Both fans behind the radiator appear to work. They were both spinning with the AC on as well as off.
* Coolant levels are good.
* Both sides of the upper radiator hose are warm/hot to the touch after running the car for a bit.
* When I run the car with the radiator cap off, coolant does not seem to suck in. In fact, when I press the gas pedal, coolant gets pushed out of the radiator.
* I recently changed the spark plugs on my own, and I noticed a little bit of oil in one of the plug terminals.

Any and all advice that might point me to the problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Where are you checking the coolant level from? Are you just looking at the reserve tank or are you opening the cap on the radiator?

It needs to be checked at the radiator when the engine is cold.

Everything sounds like the system is leaking and low on coolant.

This is as Hammer says. I still will ask if pressure cap is at recovery tank OR on an end tank of the radiator? Your fans also could or should have two speeds also feel if air blowing off of the area is heated air? If not, it's not moving thru radiator assorted reasons hard to feel for cold spots in radiator quickly (engine off) thru electric fans.
I also think with A/C fans are by detecting high pressure in high side of A/C is telling it's not cool enough so need fans. Moving along fast enough many shut down as not needed.
This sort of seems like thermostat isn't opening enough may be because of air in system but that doesn't explain oil evidence on one spark plug?

That is probably a fault to be found for that cylinder is probably also the reason why this engine is failing,

I've looked at the reserve tank as well as the radiator by opening up the cap. I'll check again in the morning to ensure a cold engine, but I'm fairly certain the coolant levels are good.

The pressure cap is on top of the radiator. Are you saying that I should feel whether the fans are blowing hot air? Is that to determine whether the thermostat is working?

I'm honestly not sure if the oil on the spark plug is related. Just thought I'd mention just in case.

The oil on the spark plug is unrelated. That simply means the valve cover gasket is leaking.

Feeling warmed or hot air off the fan blowing air from a running engine: It either does or doesn't. If fans blew cold/ambient temp air there's nothing being cooled.
Many will look like they are full of coolant and are not. That's hard to determine by touch and feel IDK I'd try infrared touchless thermometer see if radiator has cold spot while being hot/warm.
T-stat may be on bottom hose IDK for sure but some do that will fool you heat still make top hose hot to touch,

Tom
