Chevy truck ..Trouble shoot rear end issue Sign In

88 Chevy k5 blazer 4x4 ... transmission shifts smooth through all gears .. but when I shift from N to reverse or P to reverse there is a pause then a clunk .. suspect the rear end is worn out ? U- joints are new .. I have a video to watch .. you can see it shift from P to reverse .. the jolt .. then a few shifts to drive which seem regular .. then back to reverse and the clunk .... only happens in reverse https://www.dropbox.com/s/z2gp6jshkeusfuc/Video%20Sep%2015%2C%205%2010%2022%20PM.mov?dl=0

What's the idle speed RPM?

Not sure .. no tach .... would it only do this in reverse if the rpm’s are too high ? Shift to drive is smooth

Reverse is always harsher because of the angle of the teeth.

I’ll get a tach an see just to make sure . I have a Dane ur 350tbi 700r4 truck and seems to idle about the same rpm but no harsh clunks like the k5 . Thanks for the info !

It's definitely going to get more play as it gets older. That's expected.

Agreed - normal for these if both you are comparing are not identical expect them to be a bit different, Tom

One nice heavy hammer on anvil metallic "thunk" .. Agree typical for age and application. Though what's your idle RPM?

Thread is getting old now but agreed NORMAL for this. MANY in my circle when NEW (not all customers, family etc) the rear leaf springs, large drum brakes just allow rear diffs to give you a "whack" sound, reverse and did that for life of vehicles not be a fatal problem? Yes check everything include now a hidden grease fitting on a shaft for 4X4 at slip splines. Once a year or less do those just not 'never.'

IDK how but rear diffs stayed tilted hear that whack and was fine all day? Tom
