2012 Jeep Liberty Temp problems Sign In

Hello. I have a question and hope someone can help. Last night my daughter drove up to grab food. She said that her car was smoking under the hood. Went to look at it. The plastic cap for her coolant had popped off, fluids all over inside of hood. Coolant was empty. Refilled coolant with 50/50 ready to use mix. She was driving to work today. Temp gauge spiked, light came on and Jeep started shaking. She pulled over to the side of the highway. When I got there, I was able to drive it to an empty parking lot. Temp gauge was at 3/4 towards hot. No shaking. Cap still on. Any ideas?

There are some unanswered questions here.

Why was the cap off in the first place? Has she been checking or adding coolant?

How far was it driven hot. You can't trust the temp gauge in this situation because the temp sensor reads coolant, not air so if the system runs severely low, the gauge can't read and it only takes a manner of minutes to do severe internal damage to the engine.

At this point you need to tow it back and refill the system and then pressure test the system for leaks.

Remember when you initially fill it with coolant, it's not really full. It's full of air pockets that need to be "burped" out.

Last night she drove it less than a mile after the smoking started. It was not hot then. Normal temps. But she called me because it was smoking.

She didn't even know how to pop the hood so she has not checked or added anything.

When she was on the highway is when it spiked to hot and the light came on. She pulled over immediately. I got there and drove it less than a mile to the parking lot. It was not hot then. At the 3/4 mark.

You don't really know that. Like I said, when the coolant is low the gauge will read wrong. A minute is plenty of time to warp an aluminum block/head.

You need to do what I advised to find out if it's OK.
