2007 Toyota Yaris keeps blowing fuse, causes turn signal and blower to not work Sign In

2007 Toyota Yaris manual hatchback 118,000 miles 1.5L 2 door.

My car keeps blowing a 15g fuse in the fuse box under the driver side dashboard. ( believe it’s the cig lighter fuse). When it blows the blower motor won’t work and I have no turn signal. The rear defrost light also lights up even though it is turned off. A mechanic figured out the blown fuse but after bringing it back when the fuse blew a second time, a master mechanic looked at it for 7 hours and they couldn’t figure out the cause.

They didn’t go into what they tried so basically I got charged to diagnose a blown fuse but not to solve the underlying problem.

With research it appears it could be a relay but I’m lost on what to do. I don’t keep anything in the cig lighter, start the car with air/heat off. The stereo will still work along with all other electronics and lights. Since this occurred I could get by a month without replacing and now it’s almost every week or two.

Just a quick though I have to go for now: Quote you ">I don’t keep anything in the cig lighter<"
That if it's also a real cig lighter is a powerful draw vs just a power port. I thought all Toyotas that shut off with key/ignition off not the point. If that's just left wide open and placed where things can get in the hole it will short, if something small maybe not right away.
Check inside if it's clean and looks right. Put a plug made to keep things out if nothing there.
I too don't know if a master tech didn't find it just know it's strong enough if shorted could burn up wires not easy to see or find then who knows what or when it will just short again. Relays shouldn't short out a circuit rather default to off if damaged they can act up though. See if it shows high heat where it is?

Back later I don't bring this with me,

I’ve checked the lighter and even took an air duster to it. It also has a cover.

I should also mention the battery light on the dashboard pops up and flickers the whole time the car runs when this occurs.

If this fuse is truly the one for the lighter/power outlet, that is all it feeds so the problem should be right there.

Disconnect the lighters and power outlets and see if the fuse still blows.

Yes - do that. It was ages ago here nobody found the problem was a coin in a cig lighter. Dead short.
One more: Not my job if it's used for smoking anything just take my word for it, debris will fill/corrode those REAL cig lighters when damp it's a short! Buy a Bic lighter works tons better than glowing metal coils! :-)

I don’t actually have the cig lighter but it’s how it’s labeled on the fuse box. I’ll have to check it out.

Though still no idea why that’s also killing my turn signal and lighted up the rear defrost light.

You really don't need to know at this time. If you can resolve the short in the power port, that will likely resolve the other issues if they were in fact related. I'm not seeing any connection at this point.

Power port is same IMO just wouldn't work with a lighter - is better for things to charge - same exact size. Either way rule it out as Hammer said people use things TOO much for them,

New update on this. After replacing the fuse for probably the 4th time, (which used to be the remedy) no longer does anything. Feels like the car also has been loosing power, delayed response in accelerating and a few times was hard to start. I'm assuming the battery must be starting to go, but probably bringing it to the mechanic Monday. Don't have access to a garage so I'm limited in what I can do.

A second time at the shop and they still have no idea and verified they check the cig lighter and wiring twice and there is no issue there.

Apparently they are not very experienced at electrical repair. You need to find a shop that specializes in auto electric diagnosis.
