2000 Toyota Avalon recurring p0442 and p0440 code Sign In

2000 Toyota Avalon XL
Engine: 3.0 L V6
Mileage: 125,000

I was just driving my car and the check engine light popped up. I didn't notice any issue with how the car ran and scanned it with my code reader. A p0442 code came up and my local mechanic replaced my gas cap.

Two weeks later, the check engine light came back on and again it was a p0442 code. I took it in to the dealership and they replaced the charcoal cannister.

The mechanic made the following note:
"scan ecu for codes- p0442 evap small leak - inspect evap system and hoses - none are disconnected - perform active test on purge VSV- pass - perform active test on ccvsv- pass -rec further testing of evap system with evap leak detector- smoke test revealed evap canister leaking internally- diag 2.0

Remove rear cross suspension to access and remove and replace evap canister- clear code and perform evap integrity test- system pass
Note: While perform smoke test, noticed that several vac hoses are very hard and brittle (not broken) and may require service/ replacement in the future"

About a month later, check engine light came back on with a p0440 code. The dealership replaced the vacuum switch valve.

The mechanic made the following note:
"Scan ecu for codes- p0440 -evap control sys malf (note: previous code was p0442 evap leak)- inspect evap system for code reference- test ccvsv- vacuum switching valve is intermittently working- rec replacement of ccvsv to start- r&r ccvsv and clear code- retest- system pass - 1.5
Note that may other concerns with this system due to the age of it"

About 2-3 weeks later, I had the check engine light come on the day after I put gas in it (p0440) code. I cleared the code because I thought maybe I didn't put the gas cap on tight enough. A week later the check engine light came on and I had a p0442 and a p0440 code.

I took my car in to my local mechanic to have all of my evap hoses replaced. They also gave me a new gas cap.

The mechanic noted:
"Remove all components to replace all evap hoses that touch tank and under hood reinstall and test after repair"

The next day the check engine light came on with a p0440 code. I took my car back to the mechanic and he told me I should take it back to the dealership to go back over the repairs that they had done to it.

At this point, I don't know what to do; it seems like they keep fixing (maybe) everything but the problem. As I said before, the car runs fine. Should I take my car back in to the dealership or just drive with the light on? Should I consider buying another car? I have spent over $2,000 trying to fix this problem.

Ok, the P0440 is a generic code pointing a general malfunction in the EVAP system. It doesn't tell much by itself. You need a more specific code like the P0442 to know what is going on.

Obviously these people are not being thorough enough here and it should go right back to the people you paid to diagnose it. The smoke test will reveal the leak if they spend enough time looking. It could even be an issue with the tank itself. The system still has a leak somewhere and one of these guys needs to find it without further charge.

Agreed to send it back and find it this time. It's 22ish years old assorted rubber anything takes a hit especially things that are touched or moved out of the way for something else.
Tank itself? Just maybe or any seal for neck or pump? It's theirs IMO also let them find and suggest away if more after finding this one,

Make them be specific in their diagnosis. None of this, I want to change everything crap they do when they don't know for sure what the problem is.
