03 Mitsubishi Lancer stalling / starting issues Sign In

Trying to trace a startup / random stalling issue. I pulled out the fuel pump / filter and the filter seems clean. I noticed with everything hooked up, I don’t hear or feel any buzzing from the fuel pump when I turn the key on. The fuse is good, so I’d like to see if I’m getting power to the pump, but I don’t know which connections or values to check for at the connector. On a side note, the gas looks amber in color, so I don't know if that's also related to the issue.

For some background info, I’ve been getting random start up / stall issues. Sometimes it would turn off while driving or idle at a light. It will crank and after anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of trying, it will start back up. I also noticed today when messing with it that, while revving it in the drive way, it has no problems if I do it slowly. If I quickly press down on the gas all the way, it bogs down and will turn off if I don’t let off quick enough. I don’t know if that sounds like a fuel pump issue though. When I removed the gas hoses from the pump to inspect them, there was no pressure, so I don’t know if that’s normal either. Any advice would be appreciated!

The first step before you start removing fuel pumps, before you second guess the fuel system, before you test any wiring, you test the fuel pressure using an accurate fuel pressure gauge. IF a problem is found, then we look into it.

Also scan the computer for any stored trouble codes and we'll go from there.

Just fuel/gas color > that alone is to identify fuels varies by locations so much we'll never know. No harm alone. Amber on the dark side or rotten odor suggests very old fuel. I don't think that's involved at all but pressure must be checked as already said,

With the key turned to on, I don’t have any pressure. It’s also having issues turning on again, so I’m not sure what the pressures would be when it runs

Also, I didn’t have the code scanner with me at the time, but I noticed a new issue with the instrument cluster not fully working. The gauges are responding and there is no display where the mileage is, but I do see the lights for the seatbelt. This wasn’t originally there so I don’t know if it’s related.

When you first turn the key on it only runs for 2 seconds. It resumes when it starts cranking.

Here are the specs

Fuel pressure kPa (psi)
Vacuum hose disconnected .................... 330 - 350 kPa (47 - 50 psi) at curb idle
Vacuum hose connected .................... Approximately 270 kPa (38 psi) at curb idle (engine running)

It should come up to spec within 2-3 seconds of cranking the engine.

Ok I’ll take note of what it is while cranking it. I wasn’t aware of having to disconnect a vacuum hose though. Is that the hose on the intake?

No, you don't have to disconnect any vacuum hose. They are referring to checking it with the engine running. If you pull the hose off the regulator, the pressure goes higher. That's just a reference of where the spec should be under either condition.

I just noticed the pinned thread at the top regarding starting issues, so sorry about that lol

Also, I’m still not getting a reading on the pressure gauge when cranking it. Just to make sure, I’m hooking up to the hose that’s attached to what I assume is the regulator (the one with the clamp). It’s also bone dry too.

No, no no. You have to "T" into the incoming pressure line. Your car requires a special adapter for the gauge.

There are 2 lines. One is the pressure side and the other is the return. You need the pressure side.
