crankshaft bearings too tight?	Sign In

I am rebuilding a 2.5l 4 cylinder engine for a 1985 jeep Cherokee. It seems to set down onto the main bearings just fine, but when I put the caps on and start to tighten them down, I can't spin the crankshaft at all. I had .010 undersize bearings and now I have standard size bearings. Are there any options to try before buying a 3rd set of bearings or having the crankshaft milled smaller. I have tried the assembly with oil and grease for lubricant.

It's been ages but are you using "Plastigauge?" to show what they really are? If another something IDK that stuff will squish and measure how wide it got reflects the space spec needed.

Just looked it up and is out there cheap and available,

The plastigauge will tell me if I have enough clearance. I cant spin it all, I know I don't have the clearance, But i'm trying to figure out why the undersize bearings didn't allow it to spin. It seems backwards logically.

That's the correct spelling of the stuff. YES it tells you but you look up the specification first. Just look if up for a video on how to use it or the risk of a horror show, spun bearings was the problem to avoid.

IDK about how tight is tight when just done trained in all that but I send timely things out and always did.

So do that and check them all find out if bearing or crank needs attention or a change?
