Honda Cylinder Misfire

Hi,
I have a 1998 Honda Crv, about two weeks ago it started running really rough and idling really low and occasionally stalling. So I changed the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. It seemed to be running a little better but the idle was still low and it still stalled occasionally. So I did some research and based on what other people on the net were saying decided that I probably needed a valve adjustment. So a week later I took it to the shop I use and asked them to check it out. They called me back and said yes I did need the valve adjustment, but also that the timing belt needed to be change (because the last shop I used never actually changed my timing belt when I had it changed 20000 miles ago). Anyway so I told them to go ahead with the work, I picked it up the next day and everything seemed fine. Then the very next morning the check engine light came out (it had not come on at all up to this point) so I took it back to the shop. They reset the check engine light and told me the error code was a misfire in cylinder 1, and I should check the spark wires cause on was probably loose. So I left and went home and messed with the wires, again everything seemed fine then the light came on again. I these time I figured rather than go back again I'll just have a look at the wires, distributor cap and plugs myself again. But again the check engine light keeps coming on after the car has been running for a few minutes. Which brings me to the present the shop insists that it is my spark wires and that the valve adjustment and timing belt change have nothing to do with the cylinder misfire codes I keep getting, but I ran the car for a week and half with the new wire etc. with no problems and no misfire codes. I think it has something to the valve adjustment / timing belt change, so I'm taking it back to them on Monday to leave it there again for them to find the problem. Anyone have any advice or input on my problem? Thanks in advance.

I don’t think there’s going to be a cut and dry answer to your questions.
First off a timing belt is common to all cylinders so I doubt that it could cause a signal cylinder misfire; before or after its replacement.
Valves do not suddenly go out of adjustment, unless something breaks or wears out; so having them adjusted probably didn’t do a thing to cure this low idle or intermittent stall. A mechanical valve train issue isn’t an intermittent one; if the engine is running poorly because of one it’s there all the time.
What’s causing this I’m not sure but look for things that are cylinder specific to cause a signal cylinder misfire; plug, ignition wire or injector are a few that come to mind?
I also understand that the ignition parts you installed are new but is there a defective, inferior “new” spark plug or wire? Which may have taken a few miles of driving to come to the surface or has the root cause of the problem become worse, setting the check engine light?
The one thing I don’t understand is why this shop gave you the impression or agreed with you and your internet diagnosis that a valve adjustment would cure this sudden two week old problem?
Unless you didn’t tell them why you wanted the valves adjusted; did they think this was maintenance issue and that is why they suggested the timing belt along with the adjustment?
There are just too many variables and no I’m not pointing fingers at you or the shop. The car isn’t running properly and needs to be fixed; any and all information needs to be shared with anyone/everyone that’s going to touch the vehicle.
If everyone is on the same page of this adventure it’ll be a lot more pleasant for all involved; that’s if there’s such a thing as a pleasant car repair. LOL

Thanks for the reply. I ask the shop to do a diagnostics on
the car and to please have a look at the valve because I have read elsewhere’s
that there are known problems with the valves on certain models of the CRV. So
after they did a full diagnostic on the engine they determined that the
car did need a valve job (very badly), timing belt needed to be replace and the
fuel filter needed to be changed. My point is that I agree with you, I think
there is defiantly a deeper seeded issue then the ign wires that needs to be
address or a problem with the work they did. I've tried two sets of wires now. I
know there is no cut and dry answer to my question. I was basically looking for
an idea as to what they should be looking for, ie. injectors, exhaust valves,
cylinder leak etc. Because frankly at this point I’m starting wonder how competent
they are. Thanks again.
