2003 Chevy s-10 PO410, already replaced air pump Sign In

High the engine light has been on my dads truck for over a month. I pulled code DTC PO410 . Secondary Air Injection failure.
I am a service writer at a Honda dealership. And was told by a journeyman tech to replace the smog pump or air pump.

I bought an aftermarket Dorman brand SMOG pump, from pepboys. Had the tech put it in for me. He also replaced the smog pump shut off
valve, that connects to the air pump. The shut off valve was from a Chevy Dealership.

Cleared the light. And then 20 minutes later of normal driving. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON!
Does anyone know why? Or can help with this his matter?
P.S. the original air pump was full of water, during removal.

Is it the same code as speed asked?

Make sure you repair it per the TSB or it will ingest water again....

#04-06-04-015A: LN2, L43 or L35 Engine SES/MIL

Light Illuminated, AIR Pump Ingesting Water and

DTC P0410 Set (Replace AIR Pump and Inlet Hose

Assembly) - (Nov 28, 2006)

This bulletin is being revised to remove a part number and change the two AIR pump

part numbers in the Parts Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-

06-04-015 (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).

Subject: LN2, L43 or L35 Engine SES/MIL Light Illuminated, AIR

Pump Ingesting Water and DTC P0410 Set (Replace AIR

Pump and Inlet Hose Assembly)

Models: 1999-2003 Chevrolet Blazer, S10

1999-2001 GMC Jimmy

1999-2003 GMC Sonoma

1999-2001 Oldsmobile Bravada

with Vortec 2.2L I4 or 4.3L V6 Engine (VINs 4, 5, W -- RPOs LN2, L43,

L35)

Condition

Some customers may comment on the SES/MIL light being illuminated. Upon investigation, the

technician may find a DTC P0410 indicating that there is a concern in the secondary air injection

system.

Cause

Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the

pump.

Correction

Replace the AIR pump and install a new inlet hose and solenoid tube assembly using the

following procedure:

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Remove the shield covering the AIR pump.

3. Remove the hose and vacuum lines from the pump and solenoid.

4. Remove the AIR pump inlet hose. Do not re-use the hose.

5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the pump and solenoid.

6. Remove the pump mounting bolts and pump.

7. Transfer the isolators from the old pump to the new pump.

8. Install the new AIR pump and bolts to the vehicle.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (12.5 lb ft).

9. Route the new hose assembly up between the engine and fender. The hose should come

up near the area between the battery and the coolant bottle.

10. Connect the new inlet hose to the pump inlet.

11. Connect the old outlet hose to the pump outlet.

12. Connect the electrical connector to the pump.

13. Connect the electrical connector for the solenoid to the connector on the new hose

assembly.

14. Connect the hose with the white nipple to the vacuum source hose.

15. Connect the remaining hose to the shut off valve.

16. Install the shield covering the AIR pump.

17. Lower the vehicle.

18. Remove the coolant reservoir nut nearest the battery.

19. Route the new hose assembly between the battery and the coolant reservoir with the

solenoid on top.

20. Install the solenoid bracket onto the coolant reservoir stud and reinstall the nut back into

the vehicle.

21. Use a wire tie to keep the new hose assembly away from the engine. On four cylinder

engines, tie to the AIR outlet hose. On six cylinder engines, tie to an available hole in the

radiator fan shroud.

The engine code is on for the same code !! :(

And i did not follow that bulletin. i tried going the cheap and easy way out by
just replacing the air pump itself...

I heard there is a fuse that blows when the original air pump goes bad??

If thats true where is there fuse ??Maybe thats the engine light is still on because i am not getting
power to the air pump?? So it throws a code again

Yes,the fuse could be blown...

Check ALL your fuses....blows the 30 amp AIR fuse in the underhood fuse block

Re: 2003 Chevy s-10 PO410, already replaced air pump Sign In

If this is the engine I'm thinking it is, I had two of these same problems with two different vehicles.

On one, we replaced almost EVERYTHING - pump, check valve, relay, etc., only to have the exhaust manifold removed and cleaned of the carbon plug.

On the second one, I removed the stainless pipe, reamed out the manifold with small wires, sprayed Berryman and other solvents and blew out the hole with high pressue air. It worked.

Let me know if this helps.

Did you check the electrical side of the pump? You could replace every part in relation to the pump and it won't fix a shorted wire in the harness.
