I have a 1992 Chevrolet 1500 pickup. It has an automatic transmission. Everytime I put it into 4WD, the 4x4 fuse blows. The transfer case seems to be shifting just fine, but the fuse blows and the front wheels will not lock. I had heard this is a common problem, but am not sure if it is a short, or a solenoid, or a combination of both. I am also not sure where to locate the solenoid to check the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here’s an exploded view of the front differential; showing the actuator solenoid that locks the axles.

You could try unplugging this solenoid and then putting the truck into 4-wheel drive. If the fuse holds then it’s likely the solenoid that is at fault, if the fuse still blows follow the circuit back to the transfer case switch and so on.
Here’s a partial-wiring diagram showing the remaining relays and switches that make up this circuit.
