Hard wiring a scanner in my 2009 Hyundai Tucson

I need to ask some questions about hard wiring my scanner in to my 2009 Tucson GLS. I have had advice to run the red from the DC power cord to the battery positive and then the black to either battery negative or ground it to the chassis. I have also had advice to tap into the fuse box. I would rather do the latter so i don't have to drill through the firewall or find some roundabout way into the passenger compartment. What is the best way to tap into the fuse box? Obviously, I want it tapped to an accessory fuse so it goes out when the ignition is off. I have seen two types of use tap. One is a "fuse body" that plugs into the fuse slot and then two fuses plug into that (one for the existing and one for the new circuit). It then has a pig-tail which, I assume, would go to the red of the scanner's DC power cord. The other type is simply a metal "clip" that attaches to an existing fuse. It has a male spade connection that you would join to a female spade connection crimped onto the red of the scanner's DC power cord. In both cases, the black would be grounded to the fuse box ground. Is one type better than the other? Lastly, the scanner has a 13.8V input. Which size fuse (amps) should I tap into (or use for the new circuit)? The scanner's DC power cords does have an inline fuse. Is it based on the amps of that fuse? If you need any further information, let me know and I can get it tonight when I am at home. Dave

What kind of scanner are you meaning? You'll have to contact the manufacture to find out the fuse requirement. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I am not asking what AMP rating the inline fuse is. I asked about the method to tap into the accessory fuse box and which AMP rating I should tap into (10 AMP, 15 AMP, 20 AMP, etc). P.S. It is a Bearcat BC355N. It's just a 13.8V Power input. Dave

You need to figure out how much amperage the scanner consumes. If you tap a certain fuse in the box, you need to figure out how many amps is flowing in the circuit(s) for that fuse with all its devices operational, so you don't exceed the rating of the fuse. This is my opinion, but it isn't a good idea to tap fuses in the fuse block to run aftermarket stuff. The fuses and wiring were designed by the engineer to operate with the components that are on those circuits. Added more items to an existing circuit usually overloads the circuit. You really need to run the scanner on its own dedicated power circuit instead of tapping it into existing circuits. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Is there by any chance an open slot in the fuse panel that has a ignition power on the one side of the slot? If it is, use it to power the scanner. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Why not just use the cigarette lighter? That way when the police chase goes to foot pursuit......you can take it with you.....

I called Uniden and they recommend that I just go direct to battery, so I am going to do that. Thank you all for your replies. Sidom: I had used the lighter, but was getting some interference. Contrary to popular belief, just because you have a scanner does not make you a criminal nor does it make you an ambulance chaser. nickwarner: Thanks for trying to make me into an idiot. I can do carpentry, plumbing, woodworking and many other things. Vehicle electronics is not my strong suit. Are you an expert at everything in the world? I was trying to save some money and not have to pay someone. I am "trying to listen to cop frequencies" because it is LEGAL in my state and has been my hobby since I was a kid. Thanks for rushing to judgement though. Dave

It was just a joke......I thought it was funny but I guess it would require a vote to find out if it was in fact funny......I cast 1 yes vote.... The lighter really is the best & easiest option.......I'm not sure what type of interference your picking up but any other power source will probably give you the same problem If for what ever reason you want to go into the fuse box, then W2Os suggestion would be the next easiest option......A lot of power junction blocks have "empty" power slots you could tap into.....

After talking with my wife's friend's husband, who is a mechanic, I am opting to use a fuse tap in the empty slot meant for heated seats (my Tucson does not have them). At least your humor was lighter than nickwarner's idiotic response. My response to your post was tainted by my anger at his. Some people just can't function in a public setting without being an a_s-s. Dave

Statements like that to or about a Mod will get you thrown out on your own A S S real quick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Frankly, if that's the way a moderator treats a new member, they won't have to. I will just deactivate my account. Dave

If you want to run your mouth I might do it for you. You asked for free expert advice about something you could only offer voltage info on that means nothing, as your car operates at the same voltage across the board and amperage is the only thing that matters when you fuse a circuit. I still am not totally believing your intent with this device to be benign. Only people I know with scanners are tweakers, burglars and cops. All are idiots from my experiences with all groups. So by all means burn your plastic korean pile to the ground by following the advice of a company that assumes no responsibility for how you wire it in and what happens after doing so. They don't build cars, they build scanners and CB's. Maybe you can find Bandit and join the convoy. You run your mouth to someone who is giving you his professional help for free and you can expect an issue. I'll enjoy no longer seeing you here again.
