2005 Dodge Caravan: The AM radio doesn't operate, the FM operates off & on depending on my location. The tape and CD players work perfectly. The dealer said it was in the radio & that I need a new radio. what could be wrong as I don't trust the dealers opinion.

Your antenna wire may have come loose from either the back of the stereo or the actual antenna that sticks out fro you car. Check both of them. AM radio is on a weak frequency so that's why you are having a hard time picking it up. FM is on a stronger frequency thats why you can pick it up in hotspots with no antenna.
