03 Chevy Impala stereo making no sound

2003 Chevrolet Impala a few days ago, I noticed my car stereo (the factory installed one) making an odd noise everytime I started/turned off the car. Kind of like a low burst of static, but the stereo worked fine other than this. Today while driving (with the radio on), it again made this noise and then stopped making any sound entirely. The stereo unit seems to be working okay - the digital display is still there, there is just no sound coming out of any speakers at all, not even static. I checked the fuse, and it's fine, so that is not the issue. I also checked the amp installed in my trunk and all the wiring seems ok. I can't imagine all four speakers would blow at once? Could this be some sort of main wire from the head unit to the speakers that came loose? Anyone have any ideas? I don't have the money to pay a mechanic to tear my car apart and just plug in a loose wire and then charge me $500 - I'd rather fix this myself if I'm able, I just don't know where to start. Thanks

If that is an aftermarket amp. I would start by disconnecting it from the factory system.....You could start by just killing the power to the amp, but if that didn't work, I would remove the wiring, from the head unit, not just unplugging the all the wires from theamp in the trunk. If that doesn't do it then more than likely you are looking at an internal failure in the deck. You would still want to verify all powers & grounds going to the deck once you had it out but if all those are ok it would probably be cheaper to replace the deck.... If you want to check into repairing, don't waste your time with an automotive shop, either take it to a place that repairs electronics or if you skills are up to par, open up the deck and see what you got.....

The problem obviously seems to have generated from the speakers.
