Tensioner pulley knocking Sign In

Hi,

1998 Forrd Explorer Sport
2wd, 4.0L SOHC (vin E)
182,000 miles

Had to replace alternated two days ago. I went ahead and replaced the serpintine belt while i was at it and tried to charge the AC.

Everything worked fine until after I charged AC. Once the AC cycled on the tensioner pulley started knocking. Ended up replacing the tensioner and pulley.

Everything great for a day -took on freeway no problem. Today knocking sound is back though not as loud as before.

Noticed the gap on the top of the tensioner is reduced from what it had been after initial installation...

Oh and it only makes noise in drive or revers. Quiet in neutral and park.

Any idea what's up?

PS- I have not turned on AC since the initial test after charging it (still blew warm).Frown

Re: Tensioner pulley knocking Sign In

Hard to say if this is the tensioner itself yet or from messing with A/C probably choking on too much refrigerant hydro locking or stressing out the compressor. Don't mess with A/C charge unless you know both pressures and all temps while systems are operating or send it out. Wild problems are common from DIYers messing with A/C charge.
Tensioner may be bad or belt could be bad even new? Does range of tensioner at least show it has room to adjust or maxed at one extreme or the other?

Try taking belt off and spin new tensioner if needed and test it's range with belt off and always make sure belt(s) are on exactly as intended,

I suspect your new belt is just a shade too long and now the tensioner is bouncing against it's stop.
