Kia stonic engine vibrations / gears clanking Sign In

Hi everyone

I have a new Kia stonic 2020 1.0L T-GDi ISG , got it on July and 8500km on it

It already had an issue with miscalibrated hill assist sensor (already fixed) so I wonder if it has other issues ... what I’ve noticed:

1. With the car off , if I shift the gear into reverse (using the clutch properly of course) it makes a clanking noise. Same for 1st and 2nd but not 4th and 5th. Is this normal?? I never tried it right after I got it so not sure
2. The car vibrates a lot when accelerating even on slight uphill at around 1200-1600 rpm. It seems to have some sort of resonance at around 1450, goes away entirely by 1600. It’s a low vibration that shakes the interior slightly. It isn’t huge but it is disconcerting , it doesn’t sound “good” like it does at 2k+ rpm. However it doesn’t happen on 1st gear so may be just need to keep in higher gear , but needing to stay above 1600 rpm I feel a bit limited.
3. The idling rpm fluctuates from 1200 to 800 right after starting it , I hear this is normal though
4. The low vibrations happen while idling too. If I slowly rev to 2k then let acceleration go, as it’s dropping back down it passes through some rpm where it does the low vibration , and canbe rattly once it gets to 800
5. I made this video of reviving while idling , as the rpms go down they go down smooth and then sort of glitch at 1450: https://youtu.be/L5msLstt1Kw

thanks in advance for help and sorry if this is all normal! It’s my first new car so just wanna be sure I maintain it properly.

This site is based in the US so that is not a car we have here.

A 2020 anything:

That's not normal so don't expect anything else to work properly till that's fixed. It's new if a dang lawnmower - don't put up with that,

Understood - do any of my questions apply to car engines in general? Apologies , I don’t know much about cars as is evident.. I know the stonic has the same body as the Rio but not sure how different the engines are.

Just to clarify , I might have given the wrong impression .. it starts off at 1200 then settles at about 900 but is stable after that point. I’ve heard some cars do this when warming up ..

The fuel mixture and idle speed is controlled by the computer and cold engines require more of both. This is a 3 cylinder engine so smoothness is not an easy thing to accomplish with only 3 cylinders.

This is a brand new car that has to be under warranty so just bring it back to the dealer.

Claudius: Engines in general are like Hammer Time said. I understand YOU are new to cars now know this is 3 cylinders is harder to make smooth has been done. The letters following the name makes it likely a DIESEL - is it? By nature and those of anything are NOT in my trade but have a clue. They don't like being cold if VERY cold a real problem for some even newer technology has overcome some quite well.
It would be "normal" for a few seconds for a "modern" engine which this must be to hunt for an idle so it doesn't stall for seconds not much longer upon cold starts, then quit that.
All said you see it fluctuating for idle? That isn't normal. No joke I'd be upset if a dang lawnmower did that NEW like this.

Being so new it should go back. Dealers aren't really fond of warranty work, might just say it's normal to get rid of you but hold your ground. It's not NORMAL.

The VERY few diesels I've just heard on the newer side were in Front-End Loaders with Back Hoe? Those are a tractor of sorts to dig and carry dirt or rocks around to me. Family of mine is on a second one was shocked it ran smoothly and pretty quiet for the few I knew of in anything before that up close. That was a S. Korean made machine I'm pretty sure same as most KIAs - right?
End story - it's not normal. Don't mess with it yourself or void a warranty is right where I/we started - take it back and tell them or show them what it does. Leave it overnight for dealer if they ask if behaving when you take it in.
Good luck, this new it's not your job to fix it that's nothing for Kms or miles if converted,

Tom

Tom, it's not a diesel.

T-GDI = Turbo, Gas Direct Injection

Thanks! When I see "D" after a name usually suggest that. Done - it's not but it's still NEW :-) Tom
