Ford Escape 2008 engine tick/knock - what is cause? Sign In

2008 Ford Escape 3.0 frt wheel drv 130,000mi
i have posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBFbNPbWVF8 an issue with my escape 2008... loud engine tick/nock.
looking for any guidance on whether i can do anything. i am planning to tow to a service station for diagnostics.
from what i gather from searching internet for FordEscapes... if major issues with valves/pistons/bearings,
it may be best to just replace engine(remanuf) vs repairing.

That's not a valve noise. That is a rad knock. That engine is toast.

agree %100 definitely lower end knock. engine is done, best option is used replacement or re manufacture.

Aarrgghhh... You guys are brutal!
Guess I expected that but still hurts :.-(
Thanks for taking time to listen and respond!

Question - I saw a couple engines online at local salvage yard for $1000. Any guidance on what I should expect to pay for removal of bad engine and install of replacement engine?

Hard to believe that an 08 would have a rod knock...wow. Don't think they are being brutal there buddy, just being honest.

Depending on the shop's labor rate, somewhere around $1000 for labor. If you buy your own engine, the shop probably won't honor warranty on labor if something goes wrong with the engine. Some shops won't touch it if you buy your own parts. Also make sure that the salvage yard engine you find has some type of warranty on it.

You can expect to add considerable more in accessories that need to be replaced at the time of the install like water pump, belts, hoses, filters. You should also replace the rear main seal and pan gaskets while the engine is out of the car
You can probably expect to pay between $800 and $1000 for labor to install it.

I would advise you to be real hesitant to purchase something like an engine online. You really have no recourse if it's misrepresented or faulty. Shipping it back can be too costly. Deal with local junkyards that have a good reputation that you can verify the mileage and condition of the car it came out of.

I still shudder to think of what the meaning is behind his username. I hope he's in the meat processing industry or really good at grilling pork.

I'm lactose intolerant. Screw Dairy Queen.

Few of the Dairy Queens serve hotdogs and hamburgers. Don't know what kind of meat they are using though. It's odd that in the picture the hamburger looks perfect, but when you actually get one it looks like someone sat on it.

Thanks again for all of your input (though brutally honest... no offense maken/taken >> DS)

my online reference to used engine was for a local salvage yard where i have procured parts before.
i suppose i would still look into any guarantees (if) provided, before making a decision... and further following selection of garage that would do such work with salvaged engine.

i am curious though, in brief... is my current engine really beyond repair?
is it that the labor would be too costly to pull and deconstruct the engine to get at the parts needing repair or is it that the internal damage incurred is irreparable?

Anything can be repaired but it is the cost that deters a lot of people. In your case the engine would need to be completely disassembled, inspected and then machining and new parts installed. There's no going in and just repairing then noise; not without other issues arising.

Re: Ford Escape 2008 engine tick/knock - what is cause? Sign In

hi all... an update and question...
sometime has passed and quotes have been sourced. a national chain has quoted two replacement engines w/install at $4000 and $6000.
both a bit salty for me. i sourced a couple engines from national salvagers, one local. the local shop has a couple, one was on shelf.
i bought it for $650 + $100 (6mo parts/labor) + $150 core.
got a couple referals for installers, one from the local salvage co. met with shop owner and decided to go with him... est<$500 + fluids/seals/etc(<$200).
another local installer est $950-$1250.

so had the vehicle towed to shop, engine delivered and work begun.
got a call from installer that he was having an issue... engine was locked (not turning over).
it was initially, at least manually... a necessity for alignment and bolt onto tranny.
the shop has tried the 'obvious' checks... but does not want to remove anything potentially 'voiding' the waranty... will wait on direction from salvager(waranter).

now went back to salvager to report issue. they followed up with installer and suggested some diagnostic measures... <not sure yet where this cost will fall>
take out plugs (check for fluid) and see if engine will turn. i guess the thinking is there could be an internal crack causing fluid leak into valve(s) and then pressure locking engine from rotation.

any other ideas on why engine would lock? suggestions to try?

thx agn

Honestly don't think they should be messing with an engine if is it locked up. Thing could have been sitting out in the rain or laying in the bottom of a swamp. The salvage yard should send out another engine and shouldn't cost you a dime. If the salvage yard is wanting your installer to diagnose why the engine is locked, the salvage yard should compensate the installer.
