When idling my car has developed a low rumble coming from the engine, but not constant. Then if I pull away a bit quicker I get back fire and especially when applying more power in second. Any ideas of what and how to fix?

Not if but when was the last timing belt job on this? Backfire if because of valve timing off and noise from belt about to totally give out I wouldn't even start this again if it's at all possible to be that old and just do it even if not the whole reason/issue. Three engines all 2.0 L 4cyls possible looking this up. 8th digit of VIN will pin down which one. I believe all are interference engine so real trouble if a timing belt breaks! T

Ignition timing will cause a backfire but valve timing generally won't. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Is the check engine light on? Which engine? 2.0L SOHC or 2.0L DOHC? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
