Ceramic Brake Problems Sign In

We have a 03 Explorer Sport. We had new rotors and ceramic pads installed on the front end. Now, about 20% of the time when I brake it seems like the brakes slip and I hear a grinding sound. Additionally, the pedal softens. This seems to happen more after a turn or several turns.

I took it back to the mechanic and they said that ceramic pads need to time to "seat" or get broken in--about 500 miles. This seems wrong to me, does this sound familiar...any advice? Thanks in advance.

Re: Ceramic Brake Problems Sign In

I happen to like ceramic especially when noise is an issue. The grinding noise is NOT and whoever installed these parts should know that. No matter what quality you agreed to there can be problems. The lining can crack on any and you pretty much have to go back and look.

There are parts that are there to stop brake rattle and they need to be intact and installed correctly. This should be the responsibility of the shop who did the work, T
