I drive a 1995 Ford Ranger XLT. I bought it used with 150,000 miles. i was driving it yesterday pulling off the highway and when I turned down my radio i started hearing a strange quiet crackling sound out of the drivers side window. with the window up I can not hear the sound. down, however, it sounds almost like pop-rocks crackling... when i bought the car the mechanic I brought it to said the break pads needed replaced, the serpentine belt needed replaced, and the front wheel bearings needed to be packed. i already fixed all but the wheel bearings, so i was wondering if the noise I'm hearing is generally asosiated with bearing issues. the reason i am unsure, is it doesn't only happen when i turn. it is only over speeds of 40 mph and after ive shifted into 3rd gear. however, i am unsure whether the gear i am in has anything to do with the noise or just the speed. i am having the bearing packed now. just hoping someone can tell me what it may be if not the bearings.

? Some 4X4s did have serviceable front wheel bearings no harm at all in checking and not just grease if already making noise that set should go but check both. Other crackle noise I think of if u-joints can't always tell which one without removing that shaft can make noise long before showing any play. Sometimes one may bleed out some rusty color - check those first, T

? I don't know what you consider absurd and bet you'd have a hard time with the ones I'm familiar with no cotter pin you'd scratch you head bald. Good parts cost and knowing exactly how worth some bucks. How often did you take them apart to re-grease them and inspect them? Never right? Well? They owed you nothing so grease the other side if they didn't and see, T
