4WD slipping

4WD slipping Sign In
I have a '97 Explorer 4WD that started slipping in and out of 4WD, with a terrible noise. If I put it in 4WD, it's fine. But driving normally, it will try to go into 4WD on it's own. Suggestions where to start looking?
