Hi, I have a 1989 Lincoln Town car, the mileage is about 80,000 she's a real beauty. But lately I've noticed she's been making a strange noise, it is coming out of the engine (which is a 5.0), specifically from the multi port fuel injection. It is louder when the hood is up. It is a high but not steady whine, as in rather than just being a steady pitch, as the pitch of the idling engine goes up and down so does the whine. We have recently replaced the battery but I do not think this is where the issue lies.

I am slightly concerned about the health of the engine so I thought I would post here to see if anyone knew what was going on.

Sounds like a bad bearing in one of the belt driven components. You can confirm this by removing the belt and starting the engine momentarily. If the noise is gone, then it's one of those components. You can sometimes feel the bad one by spinning the pulley by hand. If not you will have to put the belt back on and use a stethoscope to find it.

Idle jumping on these? Do rule EVERYTHING vacuum out too AND belt driven items as HT said. I've only had these, currently this model year since 1991 have see what they pull for tricks low mile ones now or not.
Smog pump will make noise or can do check that it pumps air into cats (2 of them) or those small hoses don't last unless you already put a kit in for them blow backwards - heat in all wrong areas. Grease OE ones if good NOW with silver anti-seize they last forever.
Other of a few will be the on the air intake is metering air flow is a motor can make erratic idle last longer than cold start ups is normal for seconds. It too can make noise or where air snorkel bends if broken/split there could make noise and erratic idle.
Two belts on this the one driving A/C and smog pump save you/helper some grief look for the adjusting bolt on the back side not towards radiator to loosen or remove that belt for the checks.
Neither belt self adjusts so pay attention to that assertively hard to describe what is not too tight or too lose but will if you want the novel,

Just thought of one thing always ignored on exactly this engine: The rubber grommet for the PCV valve is back and down, can't really see it, rather just feel it's there holding PCV falls out, rots is a wild leak will screw up any show.
It's actually hard to replace those and it just pushed into a hole then PCV should be secure also needs a good hose. Get two if you need one you could drop it into oblivion and be without the car over the thing!
