2021 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8l

65,000 miles

My skill level: beginner. I've done a half dozen brake jobs on my Toyota Corollas and Rav 4.

Changing rotors and pads. When I compress the piston back into the cylinder to accommodate new pads, the seal (on both sides) does not "fold" properly into the cylinder and sticks out past the piston more than a 1/4 inch. Actually contacts and even bulges over the edge the pads when the caliper is swung back into position.

I assume this is a problem.

I've tried manually reseating it with no luck, even trying this with the bleed valve open.

Curious what might be causing it, and what the fix is.

I thank you in advance for any assistance.

That won't be a problem at all unless it gets pinched between the piston and the pad.

You should be applying a brake grease to the back of the pads anyway for noise reasons and that will assist in letting the rubber slide against the back of the pad.

Thank you, Hammer Time. Yes, I always do the grease on the back of the pads. I'll take another look to make sure there's no pinching, then go on my way.
