Car: 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic (not the Grand Cherokee) 4.0 Liter, 200,000 miles, 4X4 Problem: When braking and turning at the same time, I hear a rubbing-whirring sound that seems to come up through the steering wheel, accompanied by low-level vibrating in the steering wheel. This does not occur while driving in a straight line, but after turning, the noise seems to dissipate only gradually. It can vary in intensity, sometimes worse than other times. Does not occur all the time. Could this be a problem with the steering box? Is it expensive to replace? Thanks for any assistance or advice.

Seems to suggest real bad brakes but it simply has to be inspected for an assortment of possible problems. Wheel bearing(s) U-Joints or CV joints if that style, loose wheel or anything to do with integrity of all parts that move. I'll say this is a real safety issue and you really should consider help as needed and probably not drive it till this is found and fixed. How much is totally unknown until the exact reason is isolated then you or we could make a guess as to costs. DON'T IGNORE THIS. Please get help if you are not able to safely check things out yourself! Tom
