I replaced the rear brake pads, rotors and calipers and as I was bleeding the rear brake lines I got check brake system message. I topped off the brake fluid after bleeding each rear brake line but am still getting the message.

I only bled the rear brake lines. The brakes are not spongy, no leaks found. Any thoughts on what the problem is?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

First make sure the fluid level float is working and it has sufficient fluid. If that is not the problem then it has likely set a code for uneven brake pressure and you may need a scan tool capable of reading the brake system to read and clear it. I'm assuming you have a good brake pedal now. If not you have other issues.

I tried checking the float sensor with an ohmmeter, reads open but I can't see the connector pins to tell if I'm making good contact. I could try buying another mating plug (if cheap enough) so I can be sure I am making good contact.

I presume the proper way to check the sensor is to drain the fluid enough to see if it goes to a shorted condition?

I usually just tap the side of the reservoir with a screwdriver handle to make sure the float isn't stuck at the bottom.

Didn't see a float.

I used an OBD reader from the auto store - no faults reported.

That isn't going to help you. You need something that reads ABS. It has to be professional level.

Quote OP ">I only bled the rear brake lines.<
? Seems new but I would just hold that firm pedal and just bleed out a little from a front bleeder. System is possibly off center for the way (IDK) you bled just rear brakes will probably re-center with doing that.
New fluid is good for a system few do it proactively or as periodic - even me on way too many assorted vehicles all could use new fluid hard as you try it too gets old and out of spec from new,

That centering stuff went away years ago with ABS and staggered hydraulic systems.

I still suggest bleeding fluid OUT only, a little from the fronts. Fluid and or balance of however designed isn't happy there's no mention of a problem until doing this job,

If he got any air into the ABS unit he may need a professional scan tool to bleed it out.

As I thought more about it, it just made sense that the float had to be stuck so I tapped on it a bit harder and longer a second time and that did it! No more faults.

Good call. Thank you.

Yep, happens a lot.

I'll close this now as solved.
