Body shop wants advance pay, but repairs haven't been completed yet Sign In

I recently had to have repairs done on my car. I couldn't cover the cost of the projected repairs so I took out a loan - some 5K - which looked legit. Cheap Honda Fit, but full frontal damage and broken motor mount. Broken radiator, front cosmetic bumper and lights. No engine damage. I first figured I would receive a quote when the car is completed, but they asked for an additional $1200 to be paid immediately on top of the loan, which is weird, since when I asked for a list of things wrong with the car he said that they are still doing damage assessment. Why can't he just send me a quote when he is done so I don't have to keep shelling out bits and pieces?

This shouldn't work that way! You get a fixed cost quote (PRICE) to do it if running still an appraiser can figure the costs new or used parts, labor and paint. If you had insurance or do it's late ask for their way to settle costs local to you.

Forever adding costs you'll approach more than it's worth if not already the remaining damaged car had value without doing a thing - see what I mean?

There frequently would be some give for "unseen" damages for "X" amount of time shouldn't be fixed if it could "total" the vehicle they should have told you that up front,

It is not unusual for body shops to submit requests for supplemental damage after disassembly of the vehicle but what is very unusual is having to pay up front for repairs. No insurance companies and not body shops work that way.
