to "way2old". waiting for truck to cool so i can check cool. temp. sensor. since the cool.temp. gauge is working normally, do you still think that is the problem? maybe there is a second sensor for the gauge and you are right.

There are 2. One is the sensor(has 2 wires) which feeds computer. One is the sending unit(has one wire) which works the gauge. The one you want is buried down behind the alternator. Also, pleask keep your questions and replies under one thread. SO let's keep this one going and let the other 2 drop. OK??? Thanks.

checked cool. temp.sw. with digital meter. it read 2.7k when the engine was barely warm enough to clear the problem. after allowing engine to cool for about 4 hours with hood open it read 2.7k and meter showed it was stil lrising very slowly.

I would replace the sensor. According to the chart below, the sensor starts reading at about 140 degrees.

We won't give up until you do. Next time it is cooled off over night and you can get to it, pull a few plugs and see if there is any fuel on them. There3 may be a possibility the injectors may be leaking off causing a very rich statr up. Keep us informed.

starting at the front of the engine on the pass. side, first plug was dry, second plug was damp, third was dry, fourth was damp.. on drivers side starting at the front, 5 was dry and 6 was dry. didn't check last two. all plugs were light tan,gap close to spec.. truck has 60k miles with original plugs, wires, rotor and cap. didn't suspect any of these since truck runs great once it starts warming up.

You moight want to check the cap and rotor. They are in a hard place to get to. We have had Dodge products do crazy things due to ignition problems. If it is a 99 and has original ignition parts, they should be changed anyway(IMO). The cap could be condensating moisture from the heat after it cools down causing your problem.

new update on symtom. installed all new platinum plugs(same as old plugs). this time when i started truck i didn't touch gas until engine was up to temp.. the engine idled fine, but after revving engine in park several times, it started balking and running rough. it acted this way for 2-3 minutes then settled down and acted o.k.. when i drove it, it acted o,k.. this should rule out a problem with sensors, etc. that are part of the warmup cycle, right? do you still think cap or rotor could cause this?

Is there anyway you can have a scanner put on the truck and look at the O2 sensors? Also look at the long term and short term fuel readings. Might be wise to have it taken to a shop and pay them about 1/2 hour labor to read the computer for you.
