Does Different gasoline get better or worse mileage on the Road?

I wanted to have a test on the different brands of gasoline... to see which ones get the most for your dollar.

To start Yesterday I filled my gas tank with gas from hess.

Hess Gasoline 93% octane @
Gallons: 14.893
Price: $2.199
Total: $32.75

I'll let you know in a week what my refill is total is so we can break it down to MPG's.

I've NOT noticed any difference in MPG with higher octane fuel in vehicles that were meant to use 87 in low altitude. There are still cars made that require more octane and say so at the filler and the gas gauge.

The additives seem to cause less MPG as used in Massachusetts. I've clearly noted the difference with fuel bought in other states that don't use them, on a trip. You don't really notice it with local driving. I'm NOT convinced that the brand of gasoline matters,

I've actually noticed some minor differences with shell gas. Car seems to run better, with either 87 or 93, compared to some of the other brands. At one point I hit about 370 miles on 15 gallons. a little over 24 mpg average. (Great for my car) I also drive a mix of highway and city. Normally average about 19-21 mpg. (using a 1992 bmw 325i with 198k miles ;-)


I'm in the process to change my oil with some long term amsoil to see if the reduced engine drag, palays a big difference. If not then I just will be running a better oil, and free'd up some extra time.

I use synthetic oil in everything I own. I am convinced it helps in more that just friction reduction. As for gasolline I don't have any hard facts as at least here they all (all brands) get their fuel from the same source. They may or may not add stuff to make it a better fuel. I do KNOW that some don't give you a whole gallon which throws off checking mileage but is checked by authorities here so they have to be quick. Who would notice 5% less than the meter says? I can only judge MPG on trips as my driving is so mixed between traffic and normal around town with some highway it would be inconclusive.

Like all I basically trust that I get what I paid for. I know of one clear cut case where a car - out of gas took two gallons more than listed capacity!!!! Can't proove it - but highly suspect, it was reported to me and not my car so that case is is a mystery. Capacities can be off if you top off the gas but I know two gallons is too much,

Well after drive mostly highway, I came to need some gas yesterday and only refilled about $10 worth (since i was near the mobil) So I kinda ruined my Hess experiment.

I'm going to assume I got about 22 mpg. Since I refill at the same level most of the time.

( I also ran the A/C a few times, which helps run use up gas faster)

I had about 340 miles on my 16 gallon tank, and unless you drive around on E for a while it normally takes about 14 to 14 1/2 gallons to refill.

I'm going to run the gas down a bit then refill, and I'll let you know.

I'm also going to start a new post so we could see if anyone knows where the different gas is made.
