Hello Anyone/Everyone,

I am looking for someone, school, etc who can offer 'free of charge' or 'cheap' mechanical repairs on an antique car..time spent on car is not an issue.

I am a female living in New York that that does not have the financial means to repair my 1964 Ford Thurderbird which has been sitting for years and would like to get running and driveable once again.

The last time I started it up was in Sep '06 but it would not stay running once put in gear..I believe it may have a carbeuretor situation but I really don't know..just guessing here.

Anyone who would be interested and/or has the means to help get it running, I would certainly appreciate you contacting me.

It it also rusting away and desperately needs sanding/painting.

Did you let it warm up a bit before you put it in drive? Also take off the air cleaner housing and make sure the choke can turn freely. That looks like a crowded area you live in, in general, the more crowded the more likely they are to rip you off so I would take it to a less crowded area garage if possible. You may be able to get it to run in drive by turning up the idle screw.

Yes, I've tried ALL of your suggestions but none work.

This is what happened: I got it started, let it warm up at least 25 minutes but once I put it in reverse and pressed the excelerator, it killed.

From that point on, I put gas in the carberatuor from a 2 gallon gas can and used all of the gas; it would start-up but for only about approx 2.5 seconds and then kill.

I have not tried starting it since and that was in I believe Dec-Jan.

This is all most likely from not starting it for so long.

Yes, EVERYONE here rips you off no matter WHAT transaction you are making.

I want to keep the car and get it running but, it is very frustrating .

You might want to pick up a book of basic repairs for this car if you are really serious about it. Also trying a basic tune up could go a long way, new spark plugs check the filters see if the fuel filter is clean.....

Sorry Diane I am probably too late but I just found this forum. Since your in a cold climate, something as simple as gas additive may help. You could have some condensation in fuel tank that keeps car from not runnig. I moved years ago to warm climate so I don't use it in my 64 anymore.

I've owned two 66 and a 65 Bird back when all with 390 4V. As already said - choke must be free and is probably stuck open right now. These won't run without a choke in cold like NY right now.

This carb uses exhaust heat to shut it off and fuel pump is a rubber diaphragm mechanical which couldn't be much good anymore unless it's been replaced in the last 10 years as they don't last when wet with gas and just shut off for two years.

These were awesome cars but way ahead for the years and some stuff is not that easy on these and some parts are nasty expensive. Price out a brake caliper and see if you faint! If this was stored outdoors they are almost certainly in trouble right now.

You could fake the choke with a rag but only if you or someone knew exactly what they were doing. Once a bit warm it would stay running to get it somewhere to work on.

If you don't have a good budget for even parts to get this going why not sell it just as it is? This car shares a lot with years 64,65,66 ---- 67 became a chassis car and is all different except engine. There are T-Bird clubs and sites everywhere if you want to sell it and I suggest you do unless you are ready for the expense. Labor free it's going to cost to be road worthy,

need to know little more about problem when warm will it idle smooth or? what do plugs &points look like hae you done fuel pump test comprision test can you get your hands dirty or?
