what can be checked on transmission to see if it's the problem for 1995 dodge caravan not wanting to go faster than 55mph

A RPM reader would help if this vehicle don't have a tach.

Question: Is the van not going over 55 or not reading over 55 on the speedo? A common GPS tells you your speed if you need that,
