i have a 1993 dodge intrepid and sometimes it wont shift out of 1st gear. i can turn the car off and restart it and it will shift. when its shifting, it shifts smooth and there's no slipping. i took it to a dealer and they charged me $100.00 and said that they needed to do a more detail check, and the charge would be $300.00 more. i couldn't see spending $400.00 so i picked the car up. i then took it to a transmission shop and they told me that something inside the transmission was falling apart and i needed to replace the transmission. they said they found metal shaving in the pan. i then took it back to a mechanic friend and he dropped the pan and it was clean. he said they never dropped the pan and was trying to scam me. can anyone tell what needs to be checked? do i need to take it back to the dealer to find the problem? my friend only does work on the side so if the problem could be in the computer he has no way of checking that. can anyone help me?
