1993 ford ranger little 4 banger on the panel theres overdrive, drive, 2, and 1 whenever i put it in overdrive the rpms just go up but the tranny wont catch a gear if i put it in drive it works just fine and all the other gears work fine also. please help

That's a little different. Could the linkage be off? Does the regular drive feel like it's in overdrive when you go fast enough for it to lock in? That could be just a linkage problem,

the overdrive does not kick in when im going fast enough in drive. when its cold out the tranny does not do to good, it wouldnt shift into 3rd one morning. the morning right after it happened the engine was knocking, the faster i went the faster it knocked but stopped after about 5 minutes. i been keeping good care of it keeping it well maintained making sure the traanny fluid and oil are full.

The engine knocking is a concern and probably the cause. If the engine knock(ed) with little load on it and doesn't upshift it can't send the signal for the trans to behave and upshift on time or go in to overdrive. The engine needs to be looked into. Doesn't this have a timing belt? How many miles and how many times has it been done?

Even with care, time and miles take a toll. I have to remind myself of that as I care for my own vehicles and do over-expect idefinate life out of them and get away with it pretty good. It's time for a go thru on the things you just can't stop from aging,
