basically the car will not shift out of first gear. but reverse and neutral work fine
and my speedometer quit workin at the same time which kinda seems to me that it might be a sensor problem
can someone please as this is the only car we have and need it fixed asap

Did something causes this to happen or was it sudden? With this type of problem it may be worth have a tech look at it, since they could fix. It may be something as small as a cable getting stuck or something.

Some cheap easy checks to do:

* Is fluid full? If not find out why

* Check all wiring to trans is hooked up

* Last ditch stab - Try disconnecting Battery neg cable for a couple minutes. Some are so computer controlled that it may reset it.

I have a 2000 plymouth breeze and the same exact thing happened to me 2 days age. My check engine light came on and my car wont leave 1st gear. And at the same time my speedometer stopped working. I took a diagnosic and it came out p0790 Normal/Performance Switch Circuit Malfunction. Have you got your car fixed yet. A similar problem happened to me before and it was the speed sensor. It only cost 25$ and didn't cost that much to install. Please reply if you have or need more info on the problem.

Quick easy and free! Try disconnecting neg battery cable for a couple minutes. It's a wild shot in the dark but the price is right, good luck - T
