heating problem with 89 olds 98 Can't Post

Hello,

the air that comes out of the heater blows warm air then it will blow cold air and then warm air and so on. The temp gauge goes up to 220 (250 max), but the car does not indicate overheating. I am thinking i need a new thermostat to start. But may turn into needing a new heater core. Your help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Temp should stay steady so if it jumps up and down 220-250 that's a problem right away.

Heater probably isn't getting a good flow of coolant thru it. Look at the hoses and feel the temps. You probably have a plugged heater core and may be able to flush it out back and forth. If you can get decent flow thru it, it should work for you. Do not use full water pressure from fresh water source to flush as it's too much if clamped/locked/forced to use all that pressure,
