Air Condition Making Clicking Sound Can't Post

I drive a 2004 PT Cruiser with 83,000 miles. About a month and a half ago my air conditioning system started making a clicking noise when you turned it on. Before this, it was not cooling very well why idling but would cool when you accelerated. My system dud not start making this noise until after I drove through some standing water. We had a very bad storm where I lived and a lot of the roads were flooded. (Had I known this before I left the office I would have taken another route!) I don't know if this has anything to do with why my AC is now making this noise, but I thought that I should share this informaiton anyway.

As best as I can describe the sound, it sounds like there is a rock or something hitting the fan.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this matter will be greatly appreciated. I am planning a trip soon and would like to get this problem solved.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Air Condition Making Clicking Sound [In reply to] Can't Post

The guess is that it isn't to do with driving on wet roads and that it IS low on refrigerant because of a leak - perhaps small and unknown as of now. You are probably hearing the compressor "click" on and off or "cycle" is the correct word which it is supposed to do under certian conditions but will do it frequently when.......... refrigerant is low, it's too cold out already, cold enough in car, or perhaps the clutch that engages the compressor has a large gap which could be adjusted but it needs to have pressures taken and noted while making lots of observations.

Ok: Could be a small problem or a big one - can't know that now. You could get a diagnosis done and decide what to do from there. Do you plan on doing a repair yourself? If so, the more you know the less trouble you'll get in.

This is a guess and most symptoms arise from loss of refrigerant. THEY DO SELL BUT BE VERY WARNED about the cheap junk they sell to boost up the system to work. It can work and it's more likely to make a small problem a big one! Virtually all those quick fix items contain sealers that WILL make the real repair much more expensive later - be warned!

So what do you want to do from here? Get some equipment and check things yourself or get some pro help - we can help you either way,
