94 Tracer Heater Core Replacement Can't Post

I must replace the heater core in this 94 Mercury Tracer. The info I have gotten indicates entire dash must be removed. I can see that heater box / core must go "straight up" toward windshield to remove. My questions are: Must steering column be dropped first, and must dash be totally removed from the car or just pulled back into the seats to gain access to the heater box ? Also, are any special tools required ?

Thank You.
