I have an 84 cougar 3.8L, i bought it in august for 700$, it was sitting in aopenfeild and was in great shape but had been in an accident. I ended up buying all new electronic's for the distributor, and i also bought an EGR valve and now it is running great but just a few days ago it started smoking blue so no dought its burning oil and i want to know if anyone knows small things besides a engine rebuild to fix it. If thats my only choice thats what i will do but this engine only has 83 thousand miles on it and i would hate to have to do that with that little miles on it. Suggestions please?

If the rings were bad it would have smoked the first day, replace the valve stem seals....which could be the problem,.... with it being a that old I would try that first.

Hmmm? Didn't do that right away? PCV system, sludge? Oil return from valve covers? Runs well so this may work out.

Perhaps slow cleaning (I don't like oil flushes - too fast!) with just one oil change with a qt of ATF and dump it the same day for a regular oil change with filter - go cheap but with SAE ratings for new cars and dump that after 500-1,000 miles depending on how fast you add up miles and then switch to a synthetic 10-30 - new filter again and it just might snap out of it.

I'm basing that on sludge and some varnish being a problem. Taking a valve cover off for inspection would tell better what the state of the state really is...... Just an idea,
