Losing all power Can't Post

I have a 92 Geo Metro with 84,000 miles on it. Three years ago ago (it was a May day), I suddenly lost all power in my car. The RPM's were through the roof but the car wouldn't accelerate any more. I could only go 20 mph and almost couldn't go up hill. More gas meant more RPMs but no change in power. Then suddenly last night (it was 25 degrees out) it did the same thing. Both times, I let the car sit for awhile, at least four hours, and when I went back, the car was fine. So it's happened twice now, and both times, the car ran completely fine afterward. Any ideas would be appreciated! I guess one one of the main problems is that it is, like I said, a 92 Geo Metro with 84,000 miles on it. ;-) Any tips BEYOND that would be appreciated by these starving college students. Thanks a ton.

Re: Losing all power [In reply to] Can't Post

Your description is like a worn out clutch (standard shift) however it should have completly failed by now if a normal wear out. If an automatic: check the fluid level first. If way low (warmed up engine) you need to find the leak.

If you go to a transmission shop with it working properly it's going to be guessing. Fluid color could be a good clue - if dark it's not a good sign. It's going to tough to figure this out if it has worked OK since last May. You might have some luck with a good trans shop if they've seen this before - I haven't seen too many intermittent problems with a transmission but theres always a first :-(. Doesn't leave you very confident in this car I'm sure, good luck and as we all should, bring water, blankets, a cell phone.

Let us know if it's an automatic or not - perhaps we can take care it better. - T
