1982 diesel rabbit smoking issues Can't Post

Hi, I have a 1982 VW Rabbit with the 1.6L Diesel in it and around 220-230k miles. The thing smokes like a banshee. The smoke has a bluish tinge to it, so I'm assuming it's burning oil. It's not black like unburnt diesel is (that I know of). I haven't had the thing long enough to tell how long it takes for the oil to get low.

i was piddling with it yesterday and noticed that when I kick the air conditioner on, it stops smoking! Kicking the AC on makes the engine lug and the smoke all but goes away. If i hit the gas, it'll puff some but not a lot. But when idling, none is visible. When I turn the AC off, it goes back to smoking a ton.

Any ideas? I'm just really getting into cars and this is my first diesel.

Thanks

Josh
