In light of that there probably is a problem at the key itself somehow not allowing current to ign while cranking with the starter motor?? OR - some old style things with points used a terminal for the spark while cranking routed current to whatever this generates spark from just for the time starter was going and then returned to a source thru a resistor when starter was released.
