hi tom this is not about this post but i have never used thissite before and i was wordering if you could help me my cars altnator does not work i need help i have done all that i know how to do i change it out for a new one and it still did not work i have ceacked all the fues plzzz help

We need to know what the car is and what and why you think or know it has alternator problems.

Handy to have some basic tools like a test light and a multi-meter (Wal-Mart has cheapo ones + others) both for less than $15 bucks.

So tell us what's up with this and let's get it fixed

ok its a 1990 toyta cicla (sry bad at spelling) and im not sure what it is i have checkd all of the fuses thay are all good i got a new alt but i dident work eather.

oh and the batt keeps dieing and me and friend checked it and its not puting any volts out

Ok: You're here now. I think this uses an internal voltage regulator which comes with the new alternator. Make sure there aren't any melted looking wire near or to it - might use fusable links that blew. For testing fuses use a test light and watch that both side light up. With a multimeter it would show the connection is good at both side of a fuse - they may not have power for the light in the mode you check them at with just a test light.

Battery should be charged up with a charger not counting on the car. Make sure battery connections are good (it probably wouldn't have started at all if they weren't at least ok) and any other connections involved.

It's possible to get a bad replacement too. Many parts places can test alternators off the car so verify it's ok.

Just my 2 cents

If you have changed the ALT on the car, did you charge the battery before you started the car? Are you sure it is an ALT issue and not another battery or starting issue?

What does the car do when you try and crank it over?
1. Nothing
2. Click
3. Struggle to turn over
4. Grinding or whining sound.
You also said no voltage is going to ALT, check all the battery post connections.
Let me know so I can identify if it is definately the ALT.

no it truns over but it wont hold the charge the batt i mean, everything is hooked up right but yea idk

Ok: However you are getting it started it would be nice to know - can the battery start the car but then doesn't hold a charge - is that what's going on?

With it running you should see voltage at the battery of 13.5 to perhaps 15.5 - RUNNING. Engine off it would read right about 12v. It may have a bad battery. They should be charged and tested or when known that it's old like over 4 years it's due anyway. Batteries going dead several times is real hard on them and an older one won't take that well.

Also - a new alternator with a very discharged battery can overwork if not charged up first and hurt the new alternator. Gotta begin with a known good battery,

the battery works and it truns over the car but it won't hold a charge I have when throu 2 batts already and when the car is off the new batt is like 12v and when on it like 11

I have seen some problems like this in other vehicles......and the culprit was the computer, so its a wild guess.

ok but how can I fix this

Start with a diagnostic tool, it will give a code to mechanic telling him what is wrong.

If all else fails, you may be up for another CPU...BIG $$$

Try a salvage yard.....pretty much of the time they'll take it back if it doesn't help.
