The battery recently went flat on my car and now my radio is prompting me for a code. It was second hand so I don't know it. Do I need to contact a Ford dealer and if so how do I find the serial number of the radio?

The code would have been on a card with the owners manual when the car was new.
Too get the serial number you will have to remove the deck. It might be labled on the case somewhere. If not the dealer might have to send the unit in to the repair falcility to be reset, it could cost more than it's worth. It might be easier to replace the deck with an aftermarket unit. You might call a dealer for more info.
