Hi BigPaw22,

On my car 1992 BMW 325i. You have only three chances to put the code in.. So let the car wait a bit then turn the radio knob on. when it says code input the code you have.... if after the first time it beeps and nothing happens, try putting the code in a second time in a row....

This once did it for me....

Good luck

Mark,

Are you sure that code matches your radio? Also you could only try three times every 1/2 or hour not sure.....

Yeah thanks for posting the fix... When I get time to take out my radio and get the code I'll call BMW as well, and if I run into trouble I'll try unpluging the power first Wink

Re: BMW radio [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I recently replaced the battery on my 1992 BMW 325i and now it is asking for a code for the radio to work. i have looked through all of my papers for some sort of code to input into the radio however i still cannot find one. i also bought it from a private seller in 1998 so im not sure how to go about tracking the code down. and the nearest BMW dealer happens to be almost 100 miles away. Any ideas for how to get the code?

If you take out the radio and write down the serial number from the back of the radio, then try calling your dealer. They may give you the code sometimes they want you to be in person to make sure the vehicle isn't stolen. But its worth a shot and you will need the number anyway to retrieve the code.

This was a very helpful thread. So let me add something that may be helpful. I've been to the dealer before to reset the radio, but the radio went to code again after I had other work done to it. Instead of calling dealer or getting serial number for radio, I looked at my past invoice from last time dealer reset my radio. The code was right there on my invoice! Hope that helps.

Hey... great follow-up....
It always helps when people post helpful tips....

What I did was fold up that paper with the code on it and placed it in the glove box inside the car insurance card holder.

So now all my important docs are in the same place..... Car insurance card, vehicle registration card, and radio code ;-) Even though I now have Sirius satellite radio, i need the radio to receive the signal.

I think the bmw codes are 5 digits and its best to drive up to a local bmw dealer and ask them for the codes.
Try putting your code in twice back to back

As for the tool to remove the radio and read your serial#

You need either a
1 pc. five (5) sided Pentagon driver - Most every BMW model excluding E38 & E39
or
1 pc. Allen key - for New BMW E38 & E39

I think I have the right code. My problem is I do not always get a confirm tone (beep) when I hit a number while entering the code. So I am not sure whether the radio registers the number I enter because it does not beep. I have entered the code both ways -- Just hit each number once (even if they do not respond with a beep) And press them until I hear the beep which may mean I hit a button twice. It is still reading "code". I have had the battery out. Will that suffice for unconnecting it? Now that is a RTEAL problem!!!

Re: BMW radio code not working! [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Here is a solution posted on bmwe34.net

Resetting radio after power is removed or display shows "CODE"
• If the correct code is not entered in the three successive tries, the radio will not accept entry until the radio has been ON for one hour. IMPORTANT: When entering 5-digit code number, be sure to complete sequence number of that 5-digit code. For example: Code No. sequence is 12345 and you mistakenly enter 125 instead of 123, continue the code number sequence of 45 to complete that entry. The radio will not operate and "CODE" will reappear in the display. Re-enter the correct number sequence of 12345 and operation of the radio will continue. NOTE: If an audible beep is heard while entering the 5-digit code, STOP immediately. Begin entering the code again, starting with the first number of the 5-digit code.
• Another solution from Steven V. The local BMW dealer told me that if I turn the ignition key to the number two position and leave all the dash lights on then disconnect the battery for fifteen minutes to a half hour. The system will re-program itself when the battery is connected. It does not say that in the manual or CD rom but it apparently worked fine. Of course the radio had to be recoded again

If you get locked out after three tries, leave on for one hour and retry CODE, this worked for me.
Thanks !

I have a problem with my 1992 BMW 325i radio.
My battery died and after i replaced it the radio said CODE. I put in the code and the radio worked fine while the car was running. The next time i went to use my car, the radio wasn't working at all. Nothing comes up on the display and i tried putting in the code again but nothing happened this time.
Does anyone know what is wrong with it and how to fix it?

Re: BMW radio not working! [In reply to] Quote | Reply

after reading this whole thread i see two possible solutions if you have the code and you enter it and it still doesn't work.
1. disconnect the power from the back of the radio.
(momentarily, i assume)
2. turn the key on with dash lights on and disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes.

#1 doesn't really make sense because the battery power was obviuosly interrupted to get the flashing CODE. #2 for similar reasons unless those dash lights have something to do with it.

I was looking for a good excuse to buy an Alpine anyway.

Re: BMW radio not working! [In reply to] Quote | Reply

okay I have read all these threads and I still don't know what I need to do. I have left the key on the first position with the word code on the radio for about an hour and tried to enter the code and it didn't work. I then turned the car completely off and disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes put everything back together tried entering the code again and nothing. I know the code is correct because I got it from the dealer, it's 5 digits but it is still not working. Any suggestions? please help

You know why the highest number in any radio code is a "6", is because thats the highest numbered button on the radio. To enter a code of 64313, you have to press the six, then the four, then the three and so on. Each button only gets pressed one time. I have heard of people attempting to press the "1" button six times, then press the "2" button four times, then pressing the "3" button three times, and so on, to enter their code. That only locks up the radio!

Did you ever find a solution. I had the same problem, and the only one that worked for me was from ABQ Guest. You turn the ignition key to position 2, then disconnect the battery. Wait an hour, reconnect the battery and try the code again. This worked for me when all other methods failed. I also verified that I had the correct code from the dealer (they could not fix either).
