What is the best way to check if the rear end is going out in a 1999 Chevy Silverado 4x4?

Would you explain what it is doing? Is it a whining noise? Acceleration? Deceleration? Turning? Is it a clunking noise? Grinding? Roaring? More information will help us. Usually it is a bearing problem and not the entire rear end. If it has a locker type rear end, it is possible the spring like parts have broken.
