motor dies in O D when A/C turned on

What would cause the motor to die on a 1996 Chev K1500 with a 6 cyl 5 speed when in O D and the A/C turned on. Runs fine in other gears with A/C on.

Hmmm? Just at idle will A/C seriously lower RPMs? The engine should compensate for the NORMAL load of A/C. If it's really working (compressor) way too hard this needs to be addressed asap.
Is compressor noisy at all other than normal pumping sound?
